Anyway. The Truck is having Trans problem> hope not, the truck doesn’t want shift and stay in to overdrive, any Ideas. Tran’s fluid has been replaced ect.

the truct has high miles on the trans only about 200,000, motor has been replaced.

. past post I have been reading say its bad. ok, I understand.

Everything im reading is saying that the 46RE transmissions have a very high falure rate.
Is the a different model of trans that will work. With out these problems. With same or better performance.

Have the codes read by some one with a scanner capable of reading tranny codes. And you have to stick with a 46re. You can however get it built with some beefed up parts. And read MonteC's Transmission thread. It has tons of info in it.

The problems with the 46RE (which is what you have), are weak torque converters, and a poor design governor pressure sensor, and solenoid. Getting 200K miles out of your automatic is doing extremely well.

Converting to a different trans would be hideously expensive, as there isn't really anything else that is a direct bolt in. Would require adapters, just to get it to bolt up, and that doesn't even begin to address the problems of getting it to actually work with the stock electronics. You would end up paying more for that solution, than you would a quality rebuild, with some upgraded parts.

Granted, trans work of most any significant nature is NOT an inexpensive endeavor..... but, if you like the truck, want to keep it, and want a basically bulletproof trans, on page six of MonteC's trans thread, he has a list of recommended parts, for another member that regularly tows a 7000 pound trailer. If you tow, the list would be good, if you don't, rebuilding with those parts would give you a transmission that will probably outlast the rest of the truck...... Toss an auxiliary cooler, and a deep pan into the mix as well, and you won't have trans problems again for some time to come.

If the truck isn't a daily driver, you have some room in your garage, and a reasonable selection of tools, you can save yourself a pretty good pile of cash by doing the work yourself. Others, that have zero experience rebuilding trannys have done so. There is a thread in the FAQ section with some excellent links to step by step walkthus, with pics, and some with videos...... to help you on your way.

The 46 is a good tranny. Basically an overdriven 727, which are right there with the TH400 and C6 for toughest transmissions. The guy I worked for up til this summer built the TorqueFlight in this 1,700 HP, 7 second blown alcohol car:

In fact, if you want it BUILT, call him. 303-660-0522. His name is Chris, this is his website: http://andrewsracingtrans.com/

With the right parts, the 46 can handle well over 1,000 HP. Of course, you're talking about a $4,000+ build. But nevertheless....

Have it rebuilt with upgraded clutches and bands and a shift kit, and buy a good converter. And don't tow heavy loads in OD. Should last a very long time.
