Question New user who needs help

Hey people!

New to the forum and really excited about discussing all things Dodge.

First, a little about my ride.
2001 Dodge Ram 1500
85K on original engine
Repairs: replaced bad water pump and serpentine

Recently, my engine light has come on and the truck will be very sluggish at times. Other times, no engine light and the truck will act fine. The truck will also drive fine with the light on at times. Also, on occasion, it will take two or three attempts to start. Anyone have any ideas on where I should start looking first? Spark plugs, transmission, something else?

Thanks!

Welcome to the site. Did you pull the codes with the check engine light? I will move this thread to the second generation Ram section,

Plenum gasket is blown and is affecting the CAT, and 02 sensors, thats my guess.

Do the key dance, and see what codes are there. That is where you need to start. That light comes on for a REASON. (usually.......)

I'm going to Autozone tonight to get the codes read. I'll report back what I find out.

Update:
I just read about the key method and came up with the code P1762.

Looked it up in the threads and it looks like I'm in for some serious transmission work. Any other pointers or tips?

Yes, what 95RAM360 said. And that code is far from serious. Just replace the Governor Sensor and Governor Solenoid.
