Red face 97' ram 5.9 liter surging??

Hello All;

My 1997 Dodge Ram 1500, 5.9 liter,4x4, started surging at idle a few days back. At idle, it will go from about 700rpm to about 1100rpm and back. At first it would do it all the time,but now seems to mostly go away after it reaches operating temp. It does not seem to do it at driving speeds, just idle. I do not have a clue what might be the problem.I did try to do a search on the subject but mostly came up with diesels doing it. Mine is gas. I sure would appreciate any suggestions you could give. Thank you all very much in advance...spocter

Probably a vacuum leak. Have you had a look down your throttle body lately? (might be a blown plenum, do a search here, PLENTY of threads on that subject....)

Welcome to DF.

Could be any one of the various sensor's. And as stated, do a search and check the plenum. You could first try, removing the IAC on the back of the TB and clean it and the bore in the TB in which it installs into with carb cleaner. Disconnect the neg bat cable BEFORE doing any cleaning or replacing of sensors.

Ok, I will do that. What does "IAC" stand for? Thank You

Yea, sorry. It's the sensor on back of the throttle body.
