Default Any opinions on exhaust cutouts???

It's a '97 Ram 1500 5.9 Sport. Currently running a cat back exhaust. Was considering putting exhaust cutouts before the cat. I understand that keeping the cutouts open with reduce my fuel economy and provide less back pressure in the engine. I also know it will pop a CEL when they are open. I just want more noise out of the exhaust once in a while. Don't plan on keeping them open all the time. Any one have experience with this? Pros? Cons? How did your truck perform with the cutouts open? Does it do any damage to the engine since there will be less back pressure?

personally id leave it in. youll loose some low end power, not to mention a CEL which would personally really annoy me, the legality issue, it could run a bit lean, do you have annual safety inspections?

id go with a hi flow cat and a flowmaster super 44. should give you more than enough NOISE, which is apparently what your after, as well as a nice tone.

put it after the cat

i cut my cat off and left it off with just a foot of pipe of the exhaust mans and it was lound as hell, and loss a ton of low end,,, then welded up a y-pipe(with no cat) and ran a y-pipe and no muffler and it was lound

just do as said before, high flow cat and a muffler u like,,,,, or just put a cutout after the cat

That's good to know. I wonder how your truck didn't pull a CEL if there were no exhaust gases running past the O2 sensors. I guess you got really lucky! Yeah man, I definitely like the idea of exhaust cutouts before the cat. I don't think people understand that I am not going to get rid of the cat itself. I'm gonna put two cutouts before the cat and open them once in a while. The cutouts will just bypass the cat and muffler. Still gonna have them on there though. When I need to go pass inspections I will just keep the cutouts closed so there is no CEL and the truck is running fine... my buddy does all of my inspection stickers so it's not like it really matters. What kind of headers do you have and what kind of exhaust cutout were you running on your truck?

Nice, what brand of 1.7's do you have? Are they RR's or regular 1.7's?
