Default 4wd light coming on

I just bought a 98 dodge ram.

I read a lot on this. Might go to posi-lok, but want to try this first.

When driving my 4wd light will come on and stay on till i come to a stop.
I can't turn my front axle when parked. When i do the truck goes either forward or backward.

When i put it into 4wd it goes into it just fine and when i take it out it goes off. But that light comes back on when i start driving again.

Any ideas. I have checked my vac lines, one had a hole in it so i replaced. I took out and cleaned the indicator lamp switch, and also the switch going into the trany with the 4 vac lines coming out of it.

Should I replace one of them switches?

If you are sure the 4wd is engaging and disengaging properly, then you should check the electrical plug on the indicator switch. And this may help http://www.dodgeram.org/tech/repair/..._engagment.htm

The 4wd is working perfect. I just think the front tires are staying locked. Also i checked the plug. Could the indicator switch need to be replaced. I have cleaned it already.

Take the switch out, and test it.... it just unscrews. Should lose any fluid either. There is a plunger on the inside.... make sure it moves freely.

Ok, so, the switch isn't the problem then..... to inspect any further, you will have to pull the CAD off the front axle, and see what it looks like inside..... they tend to corrode a bit inside.... and things don't work as advertised......

Might want to verify that vacuum switches as it should from two, to four wheel drive first..... you can do that in the driveway, having a friend help you makes it easier.

i think you just have a wiring or switch problem. on the drivers end of the cad is a screw in contact switch with a 2 wire electrical connector. those 2 wires are the grounds for the 4wd light switch in the dash. when they contact each other, or some other ground, the light comes on.

check the wires for shorts to ground. and check the switch for proper operation. the switch is just a contact switch where the cad collar slides over and depresses a little plunger and spring. that spring may be broken allowing the plunger to flop back and forth and turn your light on.

you can replace the elec switch for under $20 at any parts store.
