ABS problems without warning light
hi-
my ABS on my 1500/ 1999 / 4x4 /5,2 l does not work at all-all wheels look on slippery roads ! the warning light comes on -once i turn the key-and after "self-test " it goes out after 5 secondes or so ! somebody told me there ABS funktion doea not work in 4x4 mode (which i cannot belive )-but my ABS does not work in 4x4 or 2WD . any ideas where to look at would be helpful-thanks oli

think its the 4 wheel abs-the lamps ays only ABS-manual describes an ABS on all 4 wheels-got the car 3 month ago and thinks the system worked then-but in summer it wasnt that slippery-so testing on loose gravel was just one try-now on snow its easy to figure out that all 4 wheel lock !
Have a look at your front wheels, from the back side. If you see both a brake line, AND an electrical connection down there, then you have 4WAL. If you don't see the wiring, then you have RWAL.
If you only have RWAL, in 4wd, if you lock the fronts, the rears are going to lock as well, and the ABS won't be able to do a damn thing about it. (solid mechanical connection between front and rear axle. If the fronts lock up, the ABS is not going to be able to unlock them.)
I have found the RWAL in my truck is pretty much useless. It is single circuit, so, if even one tire is turning at all, the ABS doesn't do a thing. Even when both are locked (gravel....), it still doesn't seem to do a damn thing. I just am careful with my braking...

thanks for the help-as it was warm here in alaska yesterday i looked under the car an found nothing on front wheels....wonder why they put this warning light in when you have no abs ! got new tyres and driv carefully-works always the best !
yeah-something is going on when you brake full on ice-but its a kind of useless i guess-might stop the car car from spinning around (might as well not do it ) so i agree-useless !
