Default How do I remove the headlight covers?

My headlights are very yellowed and in need of a good scrubbing. How to I remove the plastic covers so I can scrub the insides of them as well?

If there is already a how-to guide on this forum, can someone show me the link?

Thanks

There is no way to take them apart without breaking them, really. The plastic is sealed together.

If you do a search of the forum, you'll find some people that replaced the entire housings (available from various sites and eBay) and some that found some cleaning solutions from their auto parts stores that restored their headlights.

So if one can't take them apart, how does one replace the headlight bulbs if they go out?

You can access the back of the headlight housings through the engine bay. The bulbs have a plastic retaining collar that you twist to unlock, after which the bulb can be pulled out of the housing and replaced.

Along with what jasonw said; My lenses are very clouded, and while the cleaning solution did help a bit I found mine to be too far gone to see any real improvement. So I will be taking the replacement route and buying new housings.

Remove the headlight assembly completely if you want to do it right. Cover the bulb opening in the back with tape to keep out any moisture, wet sand the face of the lenses with 400 grit sand paper, then 600 grit and then finish with 1000 grit. After sanding and drying, high speed buff using a hand drill and buffing pad and about any type of aluminum polish. They will look better than new when you're finished.

3M headlight restorer, a plug in drill, and about an hour will have your headlights crystal clear again, the hazing is mainly on the outside of the lense. Ive done it to about 5 cars and trucks so far and it works great! Follow the instructions included with the kit that you can get from any auto parts store which is 19 bucks, youll be very happy

+1 to what Ramnj said.

If all you want to do is clean up the yellowing and hazing, then just polish them up.

I used the Meguire's kit, and Mothers is flogging their kit pretty heavily on the TV lately and I am sure that one will work nicely too. Haven't tried the 3M one, but would think it will work well too.

Use blue painter's tape to mask off the body and bumper pad; no need to remove them.

I just used a $10 Turtle Wax headlight kit and they look great. Definitely not brand new, but almost perfectly clear.
