Transfer Case
I have a 99 1500 4x4 the other day I was driving down the road and I heard a clunking sound but couldn't pull over and then the transfer case jumped into neutral and when I went to put it back into 2H it wouldn't go back so I shift the lever back and forth then it finally went into gear and it happen again but now it won't shift out of 4L has anyone else experience this problem and what is cure for this
Probably replacing the transfer case.
Yank the rear driveshaft, and take off the tailshaft housing. Chances are the snap ring in there is gone, so the shaft could wander around a bit, and eat up everything inside the case. Wouldn't be surprised if your case wasn't cracked as well.

yup, just replaced my t-case today....your snap ring probably came loose, and now the gears are meshing together. happened to mine....either hope yours is still good, rebuild yours, or buy a new one.
Get the T-Case saver, it eliminates the snap ring.
T-case is pretty easy, did it in my driveway by myself...t-case weighs only like 80 lbs. but i mean it is heavy when laying on your back. can be swapped in a matter of 2-3 hours.
my gears were broke inside, casing cracked, and chain was crooked....all cause of the snap ring.

Here's where you can get the transfer case saver. The saver won't do you much good if the case is already cracked, but it's something that should go into every intact 231 (and 242/243, too).
