trans grinding in reverse

Default trans grinding in reverse

ok yesterday i was backing my car trailer up in my yard and when i put the truck in revers at first it didnt go it just seemed to be in park tried drive it didnt engage either put it back in park then let it sit for a second then tried reverse. then it made a grinding noise but it engaged... it worked fine just made a noise. what could that be? is it a bad sign of things to come...

Doesn't sound promising...... Don't think I have ever heard an automatic grind gears..... check your shift linkage adjustment though, and might wanna drop the pan, and see if there is anything 'bad' in there....... Catch it before you need to replace more hard parts.

it sounded like i had a old metal coffee can full of marbles and shook the crap out of it...i check trans fluid it was fine not dirty or burnt...guess i will pull my pan and look around in there...do our trucks have a magnet in the pan to check for metal shaving or not

Wonder if that was your cat? Should be a magnet in the trans pan though. I think that is fairly standard.

my cat is brand new so it could still be breaking in but it doesnt do it every time who knows

Half ton truck? Is it maybe the transfer case, and not really the trans??

yea my t-case just went a few weeks ago, and it was grinding every so often, and it was the T-case trying to engage 4x4.....take off the front driveshaft and see if it still does it....(eliminated grind for me)

and T-case is easy, i took mine out, swapped parts on it, and put new one in in about 3 hours....not to bad....

my rig is only 2wd so i hope its not a transfercase or i got way bigger issues lol :-p
