Put the front up on jackstands. Turn the wheels all the way to the right, try spinning the tires. See what you find.

Thanks zman...the link helped. when I took the CAD off and it made sense. I think you are right, the u-joints are bad. At closer inspection the left side is all rusted and dry. makes the same sound as the right side....only when the wheels are turned sharply left or right, but runs smooth down the road!!.o well (not sure if i mentioned it but i just bought this truck and am new to 4wd!), I have a guy that is going to do it sometime after the holidays. I will let you know when how it is when I get the u-joints replaced...might be a few weeks. Thanks again for ALL of the help! Have a great Thanksgiving.
