Horrible gas mileage !!!! Why !!!!
Correctamundo! even the cheap autozone/kragen maintenance/repair book for these trucks says not to touch the distributor. The distributor is for fuel synchronization only which means that your fuel injectors are no longer in tune with the valve timing and spark anymore. Sad to say it but unless you start very carefully and painstakingly, cause your gonna be hunched over that engine block for a while, attempt to turn that distributor back into its orginal position you are gonna have to take the truck somewhere with the equipment to resynchronize your fuel injectors with your timing... Best thing that your going to be able to do is call around first. You know exactly what needs to be done, so call some places starting with the local dealerships to find out how much they would want for the job. Try to find out the amount of hours they say the job will take or what the flat fee would be. Call outside dealers aswell so you get a good idea of the price ranges that exist. If the closest place is expensive, see if they can match someone else's price. Try to stick with the 5 star dealers too. If you decide not to go to the dealer just make sure that the shop you go to gives you a quote in writing and that they can gaurentee their work. That way in case its not good enough you can come back and complain your *** off until they return your money. Just be as patient as you can so that you can soak up the info and make an informed decision before you jump to a shop to fix your ****. Until then, may as well at least try to reset the thing if the truck is getting such horrible mileage. Try to pull the distributor cap and plug wires off the back of the engine and look at the bottom of the distributor. See if you can see any marks that can identify the original position of the thing. Might have to loosen or remove the bracket that locks the distributor in place to get a better look but who knows, you might get lucky. Do one thing for ****s sake though, mark it ahead of time so that you can return it to its original position and so that you can see what different positions you've moved it into before until hopefully you get it back to where it's supposed to be. And who knows, maybe I'll post a pic of my distributor to give you a nice reference shot of how its supposed to be.
This is a shot I took of my spare 360. Use it if it helps to possibly fix this issue on your own instead of at the shop...
