antifreeze over flow all the time?

In the old days they didn't have overflow tanks. You'd just fill the radiator and it would maintain a level that was below the top when cold but full when hot and they did hold pressure.

Was my thinking too...not sure you have to have the overflow tank. My last vehicle didn't have one, it would sometimes spew a little coolant out in really hot weather/hard driving. Hmm..maybe that's how my dog died. Maybe its spewing because the thermostat is stuck closed? Hard to say what's going on not knowing if the motor is overheating or not, but that's my wild guess.

Yea thats the radiator caps design. It opens when it reach pressure and temp to overflow into the little hose next to the cap and goes into the reservoir

In the old days, they ran cooling systems at a higher pressure, and vented any overflow onto the ground.......

My 46 Ford had a 4 lb. pressure cap.
