I have a 5" lift with 35's with stock gearing (i believe).. Im running around 3000 rmp at 70. Is this normal? It feels like its working too hard to stay at that speed too. Any thoughts?

Not getting overdrive, or TCC lockup. Mine runs about 1600-1700 at 70, and I have smaller tires.....

 

What's tcc lockup and is overdrive a big fix or a simple electronic fix. I hope I didn't buy a lemon! Thanks hey you

 

Just checked another thread and you mentioned something about a trans temp light. Mine turns on right when I start it up, it dings, then goes away after a few seconds. It still shifts fine in all gears but no ov drive. I will check my fluid level. How much would it cost to fix the pcm? And what is it?

 

TCC = Torque converter clutch. Under normal circumstances, the torque converter is a fluid coupling, and you get torque multiplication up to some specific RPM. (supposedly, around 1600 for our trucks). When the TCC locks, you have a direct mechanical connection between the engine and trans. Less heat produced by the T/C that way. (and heat is what kills transmissions.)

Need to find out why it isn't doing overdrive before you can fix it. Are you getting a check engine light? Fluid up to snuff? Has any work ever been done on the trans? (like, was it swapped out at some point?) Generally, if it is an electrical failure, it will set a code. Another reason would be the trans overheating, but, if that were the case, you would get O/D, and TCC lock until you had been driving a bit. (and the trans got too hot...)

Is your Overdrive Off light on?

The trans temp gauge coming on for a bit, and then turning off, is just the system letting you know the bulb still works.

PCM is Powertrain Control Module. The smart part of the engine/trans. (for certain values of 'smart'.....) If it fails, replacing it is about the only option. There are places that will rebuild them for you.... but, that is a couple weeks turnaround time, in which you can NOT drive your truck. If its you daily driver, that can be a problem. You could tran and find one in a local junkyard, just find a truck that is the same year, with same size engine, and the automagic trans. Will probably **** off your ABS though. If that solved the problem, the dealer should be able to reflash the PCM with the correct VIN.

Edit: If you look in the factory service manual, available for download in the FAQ section here, on page 21-499 is the diagnostic chart for no 3-4 upshift. Lotsa possibilities.

 

i think if you got new gears in the diff, you'll be all set......you have 3.55 gears in it, and with that size tire, you should at the very least have 4.10s.....i run 4.10's with 265/75/16 tires....

So basically you are overworking that transmission by running stock gears and that size tire...how does the fluid look/smell?

 

The fluid is actually a little high above the max fill line. I'm not sure what bad trans oil smells like but it smells normal to me (like power steering fluid). Its color is fine too kinda purpleish. To adress the od light being on, it actually doesn't light up when I press the od button. It seems to engage but it only drops or rises the rpm level by 100 or so. I'm wondering that if it is too full could it have the same effect as too little fluid. Thanks for the input.

 

How much do getting the gears changed out cost?

 

Gears run anywhere from 1500, installed, and up. Depending on how weird ya wanna get. (lockers, whathaveyou)

Did you check the fluid in neutral? In park, it lies.

Take you truck for a ride, find a nice straight stretch of road, with little traffic. Accelerate easily, and pay attention to your tach. (and the road.....) You should see a drop on the 1-2 shift, another drop on the 2-3 shift, and little drop as TCC engages, and then a fairly substantial drop on the 3-4 shift.

Someone might have beat you to the gears.....

 

Try this https://dodgeforum.com/forum/2nd-gen...code-list.html and see what is anything comes up. What Heyyou said is right. Besides, with 3:55's and those size tires you shouldn't be any where near 2000, let alone 3000. My 2500 with 4:10's and 265's at 80 mph gets up to maybe 22 or 2400.
