Default 46RE downshifting twice when i turn OD off ?

I noticed another Odd thing about my 5.9, the 46RE when i hit the OD button off it will downshift 2 gears then shifts back up one a second later. Is this normal to downshift 2 gears on the 46RE when OD is turned off ?

Im a little confused on how the 4 speed with OD transmissions work. When i drive i count 4 shifts . I always thought that ment 4 gears, but are the 4 shifts actually 5 gears ? How does that work then ? When you start off from a start you are in 1st gear, so if im counting 4 shifts then that would mean i have 5 gears then if you count the 4 and the 1 i was in. So is it 4 gears + overdrive, or is overdrive the 4th gear ?

Or am i getting this all wrong ? Regardless it downshifts twice.

4th gear IS overdrive. Also the converter locks, which will drop RPM a bit as well. Feels like a 'fifth' gear.

Mine, when I turn off overdrive, drops into third, and stays there. Yours doesn't sound quite right...... What year is your truck? (Good information to put in your sig, or, 'other info' on your profile.)

1998 is the year Its a Jeep too. Yes i know there is a Jeep section but no one goes in there. Since dodge/Jeep both have the same engine and transmission and i got good answer hear before thats why i post in here..

Im sooo confused on the shifting of gear's. So your saying when the converter locks itll feal like a 5th gear ? Is that why im counting 4 shifts on the 5.9 ?

Watch this video, it shows how im shifting. You will count 4. The last one the RPM'S drop from say 1800 to 1100 big drop. I assumed this is overdrive, but if your saying that the converter locking then i guess overdrive was the 3rd "shift" then right ? I need to make a video of the issues with the 2 downshifts tho and maybe you will get a better idea of what im talking about. Maybe it isnt 2 downshift after all but its just the torque converter unlocking and downshifting..... but then if thats what it was why does it shift up once after i hit the button.

Watch this video, i should make another one when im at a complete stop i guess.. Anyway itll shift like this light throttle 0-10mph 1 shift, then 10-20 2nd shift at 2k rpm down to 1800, 20-30 3rd shift at 2k rpm down to 1800, then 30-40 itll "shift" again and drop RPM's by about 800 to around 1200 rpm. If i hit the OD button when im going say 45mph, itll drop to what it seems like 2nd gear and then shift to 3rd. Bah lemme go out and make a video

I made a better video watch this one. I was wrong i thought it downshifted twice because i was mistaking the locking of the torque converter like you said as another gear.

It downshifts to 3rd when i push the button, and when i push it again it shift into 4th then feals like its shifting again but like you said its the torque converter locking.. I guess all this time i was mistaking it for another gear... "facepalm"
