Chilton or Haynes??

Believe it or not, the haynes and the chilton manuals are made by the same company now. But, they don't have the same stuff; the haynes one is much better. Either way, as Silver said, the factory service manual for your specific year is best. You can order a CD of the factory manual for about thirty bucks, which is what I did.

I got my manuals (actual paper manuals) on eBay. It's nice to have an electronic version too so you can do quick searches, but in the garage I like to have the paper copy. Mine came from the inventory of a Chrysler dealership that was going out of business. These are the manuals they actually used in their shop. Has some interesting hand written notes in them.
So I have the Powertrain Diagnostic Procedures Manual for 1999 Ram (797 pages). Says it contains all the procedures and wiring diagrams necessary to diagnose and repair the charging system, driveability/check engine lights, speed control, starting, and complete transmission diagnostics and troubleshooting. I paid $13 for it.
Also got the 1999 Ram Truck 1500-3500 2wd and 4wd Service Manual for $35. I use the free one for '01 Rams that used to be posted here as my electronic version (I have copies on all my computers at home now).

I also prefer the Haynes over Chiltons but neither compare to the factory service manual
If you want the 2001 manual in pdf its on my site.
Only about 5-10% of the stuff in it is different than my 96 (less that that w/99)
If you have good cable internet speed it will take 2min or less, only a 60mb file
