transmissions are exactly the same, 3/4 ton has a slightly meaner transfer case, that doesn't have the snap ring issue the 231 does. Of course, the 241 is a bit longer..... So, six of one, half dozen of the other on which way to go. Either way you are going to have to do some hoop jumping for driveshafts. What you might want to do, is investigate what is available for a reasonable price, and make your decision from there.

It is my undetstanding that the steer box is beefier on the 2500 & 3500 but i could be wrong on that the trans only change with model year engine size and 2wd or 4wd. A 46re is a 46re no matter 1/2 ton 3/4 ton or 1 ton. At least thats what my reasearch has turned up. I have no clue on the transfer case but I would like to know.

All V-8s got the 46 trans, the diesels, and 10's got the 47, and later, the 48. (all RH, or RE, depending on year. anything 96 and later will be RE.)

Half tons got the 231 transfer case.

3/4 and 1 tons got the 241, in varying flavors.......

What I don't know could fill volumes. But, I learn fast, read a lot, and don't really have much else to do. Besides, its fun.
