Question V-10 engines

How many 'series' of V-10's were there? I currently have a 1997, and am in need of a good used engine. What model years will fit in my '97 3/4 T pickup? I have a terminal engine, but was told that not all of them had problems. I am assuming, that after doing an extensive search for a good used engine, and not being able to find ANYTHING here in Minnesota (or ND, SD, WI, IA, MI, etc), but can find them in the SE U.S., that the problems came out of a certain engine plant-- i.e., Chicago?
What I am then asking, if I purchase a used engine, which serial #'s should I look for? What are my best options?

Go for a reman engine, rather than used? Might end up being cheaper in the long run....

Consider, for the cost of the motor, and then shipping to get it to you.... what's the price difference going to be between that, and just getting a good reman shipped to you?
