Lifter going bad?

I had the same symptoms in a Chevy Malibu when I was in high school. Back then I was brave when it came to engine repair because I had my dad near by just incase I got in over my head. Now-a-days, I'm scared of major repairs. I break open my wallet. Dad lives too far away!

Well, I was able to single out the lifter giving me grief. I pulled and replaced all the lifters. All the lifters showed wear, but the problem lifter was cupped big time. I figured I caught the culprit. I put it together and it still had a slight tick. With dad's guidance, I went in again and pulled the cam. The cam lobe was almost worn away completely. The new cam resolved all the problems.

I guess what I'm saying is don't drive on it, crack it open and go after those lifters. If a marginally bright 17 year old can do it, I bet you can too. (If the new lifters don't resolve the problem, pull that cam.)

The malibu had flat tappets. The magnum engine has rollers. Wiping a lobe on a roller cam is quite rare, and usually VERY noisy. I suspect what he has is one lifter that bleeds down when the engine is shut off. Not really unusual.

it will get worse over time. eventually it will sound like a constant hammer beating your engine to death. Some people like me, don't want to drive around in a vehicle that sounds like a jack hammer. Been there it's loud and annoying.

When it gets to the point that it is ALWAYS making noise, it is most certainly time to do something about it.

Mine makes noise all the time any rpm wether warm or cold (not sure what it is I assumed lifter tick but it may be piston slap or a wrist pin failure). I am just tired of working on this truck and am going to let it run this way until something major happens. I have run it for a few thousand miles this way and just ignore it. When something major does go wrong the forum will probably hear about it. I am just saying that you can run an engine that makes noises for a while (we shall see how long).

That's true. The amount of time you get, depends on what part(s) are making the noise, and how lucky you are..... There is a guy driving around here, that I have seen his car in the same condition for over a year, with a rod knock...... you don't have to see him, you can HEAR him coming..... I have just been conditioned that 'noise=bad' if it is continuous. Of course, I have usually been in a position that I can address any such issues that come up. Either that, or, if the noise is bad enough, I just replace the vehicle, and am done with it.

I'm kind of to that point to. I'm tired of working on this truck and I'm tired of spending money on it. I've not decided if I'm going to keep driving it or fix it yet, but I'm leaning towards driving it. I'm not even positive it's a lifter making the noise, but I think it is and so does everyone else that's listened to it. Honestly if all it's going to do if it does fail is mess up the lifters and possibly the cam and that part of the motor I'm going to drive it. If it's going to mess up the whole motor and I'm going to need to rebuild the whole thing then I might fix it now. That's why I'm wondering what's going to happen if it does fully go bad.

That being said I did change the oil today and put some regular Super Tech 10w-30 oil in it with some Rislone. This is the Rislone http://shop.advanceautoparts.com/web...T|GRP60033____

Is that the right stuff? I will see if this helps. I hope it does.

That being said, I did notice today after the oil pressure was up I took it a mile or so up the road and when I came back, I stopped at a stop sign. I took of fairly hard. About 3/4th of the throttle and just for a second, well probably actually less than a second, but long enough for you to hear it make this noise. I stopped and did it again and it make the noise once again when getting on the gas hard from a stop. However, after those two times it never did it again and I tried to get it to several more times.
