Headlight problems
My headlights only work on the brights unless my steering wheel is in the all the way up position. i drive a 2001 ram 1500 5.2L when the steering wheel is all the way up all lights work fine. what could be causing this and is it common?
ok, how hard is that to take the column apart? its not a daily driver, so i have time, just maybe not the experience. but i have been pretty lucky figuring things out on the fly. is this something a very amature mechanic should try?
Its pretty easy. I've taken it apart and replaced by multifunction lever/switch before. The only special tool you need is a "security torx" (also called "tamper proof torx") bit/screwdriver.
Also be aware that you may need a new switch/lever, as sometimes they do have problems.
I'd suggest picking up a Haynes manual from your local O'Reillys or Advance Auto. It will have detailed instructions on how to disassemble the steering column.

i have the haynes manual already. and i think i have a full set of torx bits but once i get into the column what am i looking for, if there is nothing obvious like a frayed wire or burnt spot etc.
Grab the 01 service manual from the FAQ section here, and have a look at the wiring diagrams for the headlights. Should help you identify which wires do what. (while the wire colors may not be exact, their pin position in the connector will be.)
Also, the problem should be readily apparent.
