Hey From Sevierville TN
Hey Guys gotta question, I recently baught a 98 dodge ram 1500 4x4 and it only has 92k on it but its trans is acting up. As you drive down the road it wants to go in another gear as if your going to climb a steep grade and you mash the gas to kick it in another gear. It doesnt do it all the time but it is noticeable. Maybe Im being picky but also does Dodge Rams usually kick out of 4x4 mode past 30mph if its in 4high? Former Ford owner so Dodge is new for me.

Your lifter rattle is actually spark knock, check your plenum, bet ya its blown. (plenty of threads on this issue, do a quick search.)
4x4 should stay engaged regardless of speed. If the lite is going out when you accelerate, you have vacuum issues. (which may be related to the blown plenum)
Get the engine running right first, and see if that doesn't improve the transmissions attitude as well. Did for mine.
