Hello,
I have a 98 Ram 2500 4x4 5.9. I was underneath it today inspecting my rust situation on the rockers. I noticed attached to the firewall with a clip, behind the drivers side inner wheel well is a large plug and wire harness. I am in Northern, Ohio where it rains one minute and snows the next. I thought the placement of this plug was a little too low where it can be exposed to the elements.
I was wondering if anyone knew if there was supposed to be a cover of some sort over it that was lost or removed by the previous owner?

Here's a pic, it is about 3" up from the bottom of the cab attached to the firewall.

 

At least its a weather pak connector.... ostensibly waterproof......

 

Yeah, its waterproof, unlike the metal surrounding it.

You got that right purplDodge. I was actually going to plug the hole next to the plug because it seems to be a direct entrance for water to drain down into the rockers. The hole appears to be factory, it is not rotted in that area, just rusted. That would be question number 2, is there supposed to be a rubber plug in that spot?
Also, any suggestions on slowing down the rusting process on the undercarriage?

 

I'd fill it with a piece of metal or some sealant. Then I'd clean the whole underbody of the truck and paint it with POR-15.

 

Yep, that would be an excellent plan. Guy I know restores old pontiacs (as in, late 60's early 70's) He paints the frames with POR15, and you can smack it with a hammer, and not scratch it. Good Stuff.

 

POR15 is awesome stuff. Used it on my camaro and plan on doing my truck frame this summer.

 

so what does that plug go to?
