Transmission fitment issues 46re

I have a '98 1500 2wd pickup with the 46re transmission. I am wanting to replace the tranny with another used transmission I got but am unsure about whether the transmissions are compatible. All of the connectors on the transmission are identical between the '98 and the "new" one except that the one i'm putting in has an extra sensor at the very end of the tailhousing. It looks like a speed sensor or something but the transmission in the truck doesn't have this. My question is whether I can go on and swap out transmissions and everything will work or if there is gonna be issues with the electrical? Are all 46re the same or is there slight variations between them?

Well I'm pretty sure its the 46re because it has the round 8 pin connector, the 3 prong neutral switch connector, and the plug in the back of the tailhousing. All of these plugs are what the '98 transmission have except that it also has another sensor in the tailhousing that the '98 transmission doesn't have. Also, there is an E stamped in the bellhousing of the transmission. So does anyone know what this other plug is and if this transmission would still work in the truck?

a tail housing sensor is most likely a speed sensor to drive the speedometer. my 01 4wd has a sensor that looks like the picture below. how does your 98 look ?

Well if I remember right it came out of a '96 truck but I can't really remember for sure. Also, the '98 has that 2 wire plug in the tailhousing too. So if this is the speed sensor, what is the other sensor on the taiilhousing? When I took it out, it is cone shaped with a gear at the end of it.

sounds like a speedometer gear drive from an older model. if it is, then internally it won't have the tone ring for the later model speed sensor, and i'd think it would be missing some electrical stuff.

Actually now that I think of it I know for a fact it's a 46re because I swapped out the governor solenoid from that trans into the trans currently in the truck. So if I tried using this trans do you think there would be conflicting problems with the computer even though all of the plugs on the new one are identical to the one currently in the truck?
