Default Exhaust upgrade, but not loud?

Alright,

Next spring i want to put in magnaflow cats (cali system with 3 cats) and a new muffler. I want to go with sidepipes because I tow my Harley when i move, and with the exhaust coming out the back, it gets my polished aluminum very dirty...VERY dirty. I move a lot being in the Army and will be moving TWICE by June 2012.

I had sidepipes on my 1996, these ones:
http://www.summitracing.com/parts/GIB-6510/

But the exhaust was pretty loud. However, that truck had a gutted cat.

With 3 cats, should that stifle the exhaust while making it more free flowing? I can get the 3 cat system WITH all pipes leading to the cat for about 560 from summit. The gibson is 360. So about 1K for the exhaust.

I just don't want to be annoyingly loud....that is what I have my Harley for.

Thanks for any tips!

i would say 3 magnaflow cats and a no matter what muffler you use will be pretty mellow . im sure with all the cats and mufflers it would be pretty drone ?

i would def do magnaflow cats for there giving the gain , and just pick the muffler that sounds the best of what you heard on trucks and youtube and go from there .

any way to bypass having 3 cats that really crazy, i can pass emmisions with 1 , im sure motor is struggling to breathe right with all that restriction on there.
i would get 2 of these and 1 real magnaflow cat to pass http://qwickstep.com/search/gut-cata...converter.html

im sure there is trucks in cali that have less than 3 cats, i know you wont be able to have cats shipped to you maybe pay someone on the forum too order them for you and have them send them too you ?

i dunno good luck though. i know the highflow cats were one of the funnest mods i did for my truck

Oh, I am living in Arkansas now, but I can't just hack off the 2 precats. My PCM is a California emissions PCM, and there are 4 wires for 4 oxygen sensors that go back into the PCM from the sensors. So I can't just delete them without a code, or worse.

I CAN take off the third cat (2/2.5 SISO), and just run with precats, but places still cannot take off a cat and replace it with straight pipe. I was thinking of cutting it off myself and taking it to a shop with a new muffler. But i don;t want it to be too loud. the precats are really small.

Thanks for the help.

Cali setup kinda good but i hacked off the big azz 3rd "unmonitored "cat but prob run duels off each bank when said and done. or replace stock cats with these.

My turets is hard to manage around the guy who doesn't want to get any road grit on his trailered HD....

Just kidding CPTAFW163. I polishy my wheels way to much too bro, ha!

Seriously though. If your trucks exhaust is bad enough tot get trailered bikes dirty somethings seriously up with your motor you should get looked at before going X-country. A;sp no way your going to do much trailering on an open trailer and keep the bike clean. May as well plan polishing that aluminum after the trips. No way arund it except maybe...

An enclosed cargo trailer. I pull my dirt bikes and harley behind my camper sometimes in my little enclosed cargo trailer. I put some wicked locks on there and theres no fancy stickers or anything to attract thieves. Keeps the bikes real clean and secure while I travel. I actually flipped the axles under the springs and run some 35" tires on it and it's been working out really good for me. Sometimes I wonder why I keep hanging onto my house it wrks so good.

Edit: If it were me, since you have 3 cats already, go minimalist first then add mufflers to taste. IMO that gibson you linked looks heavy, overcomplicated and $$$. I bet you could easily get away with some glasspacks if you want. I'm starting to think about a baffled muffler myself. Might try one of those cherry bomb extremes.

Ugly,

Have you ever trailered a HD from NY to oklahoma, then to California, then to Arkansas within 18 months? I will be going from oklahoma to indiana and then from Indiana to NY.

I am not talking about a quick trip. i am talking about many miles.

It is not THAT bad, but the exhaust sticks to the aluminum oxidation, so instead of it being white (the oxidation), it is Black.

My truck passed California Bay area emissions...there is nothing wrong with the emissions.

Wow, I just am thinking how I will have moved across country and BACK with 4 stops along the way...since Nov 2007 to May 2012!!

I feel like a gypsy

CPTAFW163,
I ran my truck until the exhaust literally fell off while i was doing a road trip from VT to LA. I drove it until it i couldnt take it anymore, which was about NJ. Went and bought the cheapest muffler Autozone had, which was a generic Thrush (Thrushpower) muffler that set me back about 35 bucks, plus a few bucks for some clamps. Clamped that thing up and i couldnt be more happy with the way that thing sounds! Has a little bit of a growl at low RPM, but is very quiet at highway speeds with little to no drone at 60 mph +. You will have to fabricate, or pay someone to fabricate the side pipes for ya but that shouldnt be too costly or labor intesive if you have the tools or know some one who does. I know ill probably get some nasty grams for this one but hey its my two cents! Best of luck to ya!

CPT,
As a fellow "California Catalytic Converter" victim might I suggest you go with the Flowmaster series 10 muffler? It is advertized as "not recommended" for street use, however, with your x3 cats, it won't be loud at all. It will have a low, throaty rumble at about 1800 rpms. I put one on a few months ago. I have the three cats. I love the sound, but it's still very tame.
