My top speed of 90mph truck
Your gears are probably fine actually. You probably have something between a 3.21 and a 3.9. Seems like that range would be good for a driver. Much lower or higher than that range with stock tires, and you'll be either gutless, or screaming.
Can anybody report on the difference between cap, open bed, and tonneau cover?

Not sure about the tonneau cover, but I'd bet the cap helps. I've also heard that the older ford lightening can't hit top speed unless the tailgate is down. Yeah I know that at highway speeds the tailgate is supposed to create a bubble that the air goes over. But I'm sure things change with how well that bubble works at 65 vs 105.
At the risk of sounding like a complete moron, I shall admit . . . I'm not sure if its just me, but my truck seems to be happier at 65 if I have my atv in the back. The quad is about 400lbs or so, so the weight difference isn't huge. The atv is slightly lower than the cab, and I'd imagine the air mainly flows over it.

Maybe. It rode better when I had my dump insert too, but it felt like a dog. Ride quality isn't what I mean though. I mean it feels like I'm in the throttle less, and the speedometer likes to stay a bit farther on the right side.
I know my longbed runs better with a soft tonneau than without. A cap might just be additional weight and unless you must have one for a job, its pretty darn grandpa looking.
Now a Ford Lightning with a sleeper cap would be a sight....

I have a cap on my truck. I don't think it makes much of a difference because the grille and whole front end of our trucks are so flat. THe front of our trucks are not wind resistant.
The most aerodynamic car of our time has to be the IROC camaros of 1982-1992. In fact, during that time, they were. Hence why they were so popular in circle track (and still today).

Guys help when I run the truck for about 15 mins and come to an idle my oil light flashes and the oil needle bounces from 20 to 0 until I step on the gas then it goes up to about 30 until I come to a stop again......
