Default Transfer case blues

1st problem
I have a 2000 ram 1500. The original TC, which is a 231D, works fine in 2 WD, however when shifting to 4WD hi or low all I would get is no movement and a loud growling sound. Does this sound fixable? or should I break down and get one from the boneyard for 350 bucks?

2nd problem
I got another TC that was supossedly rebuilt. But the shift pattern is completely different. Is it possible that whoever the rebuilder was to have put something in backwards? Or were the earlier TCs that much different? I think it was from a '98.

Thanks for any info

Yes, no movement, just growling. Like gears that were almost meshed, but not enough to get a bite

but it works in 2wd????? I would be REAL suspicious about that...... better drop the rear drive shaft, and see how much movement you get in the rear output shaft on the t-case. I suspect you have some internal issues there.....
