So what parts did you replace in the OD unit?

This is very helpful, I am going to do some reading before I go any further. Sometimes the best thing to do is slow down and regroup. I will post to let everyone know my pogress. Thank you all very much.

Default 1999 dodge ram 1500 4x4

Ok I have ran into a problem. I bought a overdrive for my truck because the casing broke on the last. All splines seem to be lined up, but stops about an inch from the base and wont move any farther. I have tried it on two different transmissions and I get the same result. I have looked in books and online and have found nothing, does any one know why I am having this problem?

There is a cute tool you need to line up the splines in the O/D unit.... That is probably where your problem is coming from.

Do you need the alignment tool if you just pull the overdrive unit off and use the same intermediate shaft? Is it possible to do this without dropping the whole tranny?

I have had this problem as well. If you look into the overdrive unit with a light you can tell if the two splined sections are aligned. even though mine was aligned with a tool I could see a slight variation. I put a folded up shop rag over the out put shaft end and gave it a tap with a 3lb sledge and it went right on.

The last thing you want in your tranny is "shop rag" fibers. They'll mess up you valve body pretty good. Don't skimp when it comes to your tranny. Do it right the first time and there won't be a second time.
