Hello eveyone, I have a 2000 Dodge Ram 1500. I am triing to install a rebuilt overdrive unit on the transmission. I am able to get the splines lined up, however the unit stops about 1 inch short of the mating surfaces. any help would be greatly appreciated.

Did you use the appropriate aligning tool to make sure all the splines line up? click on the link to see the specialty tools needed. I think that's the problem.

Default overdrive alignment

Thank you for your reply, I must admit this installation has been challenging. I was hoping you might explain, what needs to be aligned on the OD unit that is not allowing me to complete the installation. I have no problem spending a $150 to get this truck back on the road, I just do not understand what I am missing where alignment is concerned.

Thanks Jarhead. That's what you need to do. I had the same problem when I installed my OD unit until I figured it out. By the way, that blog along with the ATSG manual helped me out tremendously!!!

Thank you all for your help. I bought a rebuilt overdrive unit, would I need this alignment tool with an assembled unit?

I am tiing to install a rebuilt overdrive unit. Will I need the alignment tool to install a unit that was rebuilt by a certified mechanic?

It doesn't matter who built it before you. If your gonna disassemble and reassemble your OD unit, you need that alignment tool in order to align all the splines together so that the OD unit sets well to the main barrel of the tranny. Also, If you decide not to measure for you spacer, put the old spacers in. Either or.

Thank you for your help. I will order the the alignment tool. Is there any special techniques, or should I order a service manual as well?

If you could hold off on ordering those parts until later on tonight, I can direct you to a free manual.
