Unhappy All I hear is a 'tick' when I try to start the '96

The last several times I've tried to start the truck, all I hear is a single 'tick' sound and then nothing. Sometimes on the second or third attempt it fires up. The dash indicator shows the battery charge while running is above 14 amps, closer to 15.

Do I need a new starter or is this something else?

Thanks for any input!

Swap the starter relay with one of the others in the PDC. (but, NOT the ASD relay please....)

If that doesn't help, clean all battery connections on the path of the positive cable. (battery, PDC, starter motor)

If THAT doesn't help, yank the starter and have it tested.

Follow my CTM thread.

I thought it was the battery - new battery

I thought it was the starter - new starter contacts

Now I dont even get the lights in the dash. I think my CTM is toast.

To bring some closure to this thread, it was the STARTER.

Got a used one from a salvage yard and finally got it installed today. Started up like new.
