only filter is actually in the tank..... not precisely serviceable. Checking fuel pressure for starters would be a good idea.

There should be a schraeder valve on the drivers side fuel rail. (like a tire valve stem.) Need to pick up a gauge, and the gauge will screw right onto the valve. (valve probably has a cover on it. take that off first. ) Pressure should be right about 49PSI for your truck.

You can buy/rent a pressure gauge from the parts store.

The fuel filter is built into the pressure regulator on top of the fuel tank. The one in the tank is just a screen for large debris.

when my 97 did the same thing it was a throttle position sensor.
my opinion is for you to put in the o2 sensors and the cats back on it. but it is your choice

To me it sounds like the fuel pump. My ram was doing the same thing when my fuel pump started acting up. And its pretty safe to drop the tank since these trucks sit pretty high. I had to drop my tank when i had quite a bit of gas in it. And it wasn't too hard putting it back up. Just use a jack and a peice of wood to support the whole tank while lifting back in place. Its just 2 metal straps that hold it in place.
