Naa, its not. I've been landing on mine for years, and I use my race vehicles harder then anyone on this forum. I know it works.


OP, don't worry about your axles. I speak from actual realworld fabrication and racing Experience. If you were rolling on D30's or Corporate 9.25's I'd be worried. D44's, no way.

Again, APPLES AND ORAGNES!

Your reading comprehension is about zero.

Your CUSTOM IFS with D44 SPINDLES (which again the Dodge D44 does not use!) is completely different and is used in a completly different manner! You aren't using D44 Balljoints or knuckles nor are you putting low range torque through 4.88s gears through D44 shafts nor are you doing it with 38" tires.

Buellstunter, if you are still unsure about the D44 (since there are some different opinions here), go check over at Pirate or Pavementsucks, do a quick search and you'll probably find what you need. There are plenty of guys there working their trucks way harder then ANYONE on this forum. They can tell you what a D44 from a stock Ram (the same configuration as what you have) can or can't handle with realworld experience. Regardless of what is being "discussed" here, I think you are on the right path for the future of your rig. The D60 swap is a great swap, and one that I've seen done several times. Makes for a sweet setup if you do it right. Best of luck.

Viper jr? Sorry...I didn't mean you Silver.
+20 on the PS forums, in fact do a search for Beast or BEAST or The Beast, or whatever his s/n was, and you can watch him destroy a D-44 in a matter of months.
A D-44 was meant for a stock 1500 ram, or one lightly modded. Sure it works better on lighter vehicles. You can spend lots of money on one, and when an axle joint goes and takes out the ears and the C's you now have an expensive pile of scrap metal.

Few I found with a quick search. The jist of it is, you can run 38's if you don't wheel hard, and you should expect to go through parts faster (hubs, bearings, u-joints, ball-joints, etc...) Pretty much the same concensus being given here on DF.

Silver_dodge. Thanks for the links and all the info.

Thanks to everyone for the interesting discussion on the D44's. I Like to hear of others experiences with things they have seen or done. This was a big help with my decision. great forum and great people here.

ok, Got a question about the carrier's in the Dana 44 axle. I found a complete set of gears and install kit on ebay. http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eB...K%3AMEWAX%3AIT

It has a note stating compatible carriers include D44 3.92 & numerically higher for the front. & chrysler 9.25 any for the rear. My question is how do I know what carrier I have in my truck. According to the identification label on the hood I have D44 in front with 3.5 gears. Does that mean my carrier is a 3.5 and this kit will not work?

If you still have the 3.55 gears then that kit will not work unless you buy a new carrier. There is a carrier split at 3.92.

You also have a choice of buying "thick" gears, but I would just get a new carrier. There not that much money.

ok. thanks. If i pick up a larger carrier 3.92 and up. will my axle and spider gears etc. fit it?
