^If you have a manual, it is a 5 speed. Which means you have been driving with only 4 gears.

I posted the thing about the 46RE cause I am getting into an argument. It is unrelated to the problem at hand.

Wow ok i havent read the entire thread but like 4-5 of you guys are really wrong on this...

The Automatic transmissions in the dodge was the same used in the Jeeps in these years. Its 4 speed automatic with overdrive... Meaning 4th gear is overdrive... There is no 5th gear. The 5th gear you guys are fealing on your trucks is the torque converter locking up... lol if your so called 5th gear (aka torque convertor) isnt engaging (aka locking) then its probably your torque converter that is going bad or is bad.

I always made this mistake also, calling the torque converter a 5th gear. I relise the thread maker said he has the 5 speed manual but some of you guys said the automatic was a 5 speed also and its not

Yes, I understand this.
The poster has a 5 speed MANUAL.
Are you speaking of the manual or the automatic?

5th gear is a known issue with the nv4500 manual trans, but its actually a very easy fix, what happens is there is a nut that holds the 5th gear on, and it will loosen and allow the gear to slide back on the shaft, just need to pull the rear housing on the trans and put the nut back on, with the use of locktight, or double nut, tack weld, ect...
