Erm..... what does the shift **** say? I wasn't aware that the 2nd gens came with any other trans than the 5 speed.......

Can you stir the trans to where fifth gear SHOULD be?? I suppose it is possible that the trans was swapped out at some point......

^That would be correct if she has a 5 speed manual.
What matty said would also be true if she has a auto.
Although, I DO think its 3sp with overdrive. Making a 4 sp auto.
I may be wrong though.

No doesn't over heat. Truck runs great. The shift **** is a after market one. When I got it, I thought fifth was out so assumed it needed replaced. The reason why I thought is because when you go to put it where fifth normally is it acts as if you are putting it in N

Its a 3sp, damnit! (the 46RE)

The 46RE (Fig. 1) is a four speed fully automatic
transmissions with an electronic governor. The 46RE
is equipped with a lock-up clutch in the torque converter.
First through third gear ranges are provided
by the clutches, bands, overrunning clutch, and planetary
gear sets in the transmission. Fourth gear
range is provided by the overdrive unit that contains
an overdrive clutch, direct clutch, planetary gear set,
and overrunning clutch
