I'd check the TV cable just in case because the adjustment is free if you do it yourself.

Not letting the key out... Hmmm... if the shifter is hitting the top of its travel, try pushing the shifter toward the instrument cluster. Don't force it, just make sure that if it can it's falling into the detent. Might work, might not.

The problem is the shifter isn't going all the way up. It also seems like it has a slight whine in second as the rpms get higher and when it shifts I don't notice it.

TV does affect all shifts (except 3-4), but if its only slightly out of adjustment 1-2 may be the only noticeable change. Had it happen in the past, and 2-3 was barely different. 1-2 was a different story, shifted late and hard, every time i took a corner it would slip until i readjusted the cable.

Order to check/repair is: TV cable, Band adjustment, gov pressure sensor/transducer

Edit: I see you have a 97, which would be a 46rh tranny. In which case it would affect 3-4 shift. Doesnt change my point though

Nope it's a 46re they phased the rh's out in 95. I'm gonna check the tv cable and drop the pan and change the filter and fluid. Also about the shifter when I got home I tried the pushing it up and towards the dash and it worked but the truck won't start in park. Maybe just the linkage needs some tweaking?

Might wanna try and see if adjusting it up makes any difference. You can get the 01 service manual from the faq section here, procedure is in there.

Edit: While you are down there, might want to see if the P/N switch is bunged up as well.....

Is it the round flat connector that sticks off the side? I believe the one that sticks up by the selector is for the overdrive.

Ok today I got under the truck and took the shift linkage off and tried to put it park that way and it wouldn't go. Anybody got any ideas?

Time to drop the pan, and see what is in there.

By "wouldn't go" do you mean that the shifter wouldn't physically move that far, or that the sprag never engaged, or that it moved far enough but you couldn't feel the detent happen?
