So I need to open the T-case to inspect for damage

You don't have to. I split mine open when I did it just to make sure nothing was damaged inside.

Is there a way to bypass the transfer case and just use 2wd for a bit untill I have money for a new transfercase?

I feel like this "snap ring" fix is o easy/cheap/good to be true lol. Plus I dont even know where to begin.

It is that easy and we've already told you how to fix it and plenty more info is out there.

Where can I find this specific information to learn how to exchange it? Would it be in chiltons?

I called auto zone and shucks and niether of them seemed to know what I was talking about lol. And they say they dont have anything like that....****

That's the only source I know for the Transfer Case Saver. Any parts you might need, they can get -- give 'em a call and talk to Shep or Dave. They're about the most knowledgeable guys you'll ever talk to.

You should very carefully inspect the rear half of your transfer case for cracks. Letting a broken snap ring go leads to all kinds of nastiness:

Thanks man. you have been enourmously helpful. How can I check for linkage issues? Do I need to drop the transfer case to check it out?
