Default Bad PCM???????????

Ok here is the storey. 2000 Dodge Ram 2500 Quad cab 5.9L Engine code Z. Had bad exhaust leak. Back bolts on the exhaust manifolds were broke. Decided to go after them and fix. pulled them off and tried to get the bolts out. Couldn't get them out with motor in truck. Pulled heads to take to local shop to have them get them out. Checked heads while there. Found them to be cracked between the exhaust and intake valves. So instead of messing with them time to replace. Decided to go with a new engine rather then just the heads. Got a short block. New. Put everything together. Had to replace intake manifold. Got everything all together and put back in the truck. Truck will not stay running and when does run it pops and sputters. I've checked the timing numerous times, checked the wires numerous times. Plugged in scanner and it showes PO351. Replaced the coil. replaced the cam sensor. Still does it. Scanner shows the gap being ok. Don't understand that one. But truck will not continue to run. the code calls for Ignition 1 coil bad, ASD bad, or PCM. Is there a way to pull PCM out of truck and have it tested? Dealer said apt and $60. to test but need truck there. I don't want to tow it there if I don't have to. Any suggestions? Also when it runs rough we thought maybe vaccum leak. Sprayed some choke cleaner around intake and it actually caught fire. Put fire out right away. But wonder maybe Plantium gasket bad? Any help would be appreciated.

What did you do for heads?

Where did you get your cam sensor?

Didn't break the crank sensor when you installed the engine did you?

You didn't replace the plenum gasket when the engine was apart?

Bought a complete new short block. Comes with heads, and lower end all together. All nice and new. Just need to put on my timing cover, oil pan and intake manifold. I know i should have replaced the plentium gasket when it was off. I didn't. Cam sensor is new. Autozone. Crank sensor is reading fine. So it didn't get smashed. I know there a bitch where they are.

The other thing is I did have a brain fart and hooked up a ground to back of alternator. It poped the 140 amp fuse. Could that have back fed and took out PCM?

Any cam and crank sensors pretty much need to be purchased at the deal IIRC.
The same with 02 sensors.

And, yes, our PCM's are rather susceptible to electrical problems; you very well could have taken it out when you hooked up the ground back to the alternator.

Welcome to DF.
Have fun!

Ah, you got a long block then. Short block doesn't come with heads.

Check all of your grounds. Wonder if you missed the one behind the passenger head?

Got all the grounds. Checked them like crazy. this thing has me going nuts. I'm thinking of ordering the PCM but don't want to buy that if I don't have to.

I would be looking at the autozone cam sensor....... (I haven't had good experiences with autozone electrical parts...) These trucks really don't seem to care for aftermarket sensors in critical positions. (cam and crank sensors in particular.)

K i'm gonna go big on this one. I'm gonna pull the intake back off and change the Platinum gasket. Figured better safe then sorry. Oh wait already sorry cause i didn't replace it when everything was apart. I'll order in a crank and cam sensor direct from Dodge. see what what happens with that. If that doesn't work PCM is next.

Never had an problem with aftermarket sensors. BW or STANDARD. In fact just replaced a buddy's crank sensor with one from Advance. Wouldnt start but the fuel pump still kicked on and had pressure and lost spark. Replaced and fired right up. Dealership=stealership=more money for the same part.

Post some pics of the new motor and when you remove the intake if you would plz. Ill be pulling mine when summer rolls around like to get an idea.

Was the distributor removed or moved? And have you had the cat checked?
