EVAP/PURGE SOLENOID
DESCRIPTION
All 3.9L/5.2L/5.9L/8.0L gasoline powered engines
use a duty cycle EVAP canister purge solenoid. The
solenoid regulates the rate of vapor flow from the
EVAP canister to the throttle body. The Powertrain
Control Module (PCM) operates the solenoid.
During the cold start warm-up period and the hot
start time delay, the PCM does not energize the solenoid.
When de-energized, no vapors are purged. The
PCM de-energizes the solenoid during open loop operation.
The engine enters closed loop operation after it
reaches a specified temperature and the time delay
ends. During closed loop operation, the PCM energizes
and de-energizes the solenoid 5 or 10 times per
second, depending upon operating conditions. The
PCM varies the vapor flow rate by changing solenoid
pulse width. Pulse width is the amount of time the
solenoid energizes. The PCM adjusts solenoid pulse
width based on engine operating condition.

I read through the 4 pages and all I can say is wow. First, when you reset the computer, you need to drive the truck. Meaning drive it on the highway for about 30 to 40 miles. The computer needs to re-learn and its a great way for the truck to know whats wrong as well. Other sensors that are faulty, will mess with other sensors, setting off different codes. Disconnect the battery, replace your O2 sensors, take it for a long drive and come to us what codes you got.

i didn't bother reading all this crap either, but 2 things you need to know are -

to clear all codes - disconnect negative battery cable and turn on headlights for 30 seconds. this clears all codes and learned/adaptive settings in the pcm. it also places the pcm in a condition where inspection and smog testing cannot be performed until you go through the appropriate "drive cycle" which is more or less a mix of varied driving speeds and durations for about 50 miles or so.

to read your codes on a 99+ digital odometer. turn the ignition key on, off, on, off, on and read odometer. write down the numbers and look them up. it will end with P-done.

about your evap code... there was a recall on that in like 98 or something... go to dodges main website and punch in your vin.... if it has never been addressed they will fix it for free

I bout my 96 in 2010 i'm the 6th owner. I found 2 recalls one in 98 and one in 2000 on my truck and 10 years later they fixed it for free lol

Fighting an evap code really sucks. There were times when I was trying to fix mine... when I thought I had it fixed. But the light will come back on after three warm-up cycles. So it was a repeated process of inspect, replace, wait.

What ended up fixing my problem, was replacing the hoses near the purge solenoid (front passenger side of engine bay), as well as the big hoses connected to the canister on the passenger frame rail under the cab. The dealer wanted some ridiculous amount for hoses (over $120), so I just bought fuel line at Autozone for a grand total of 10 bucks.

Good luck,
Cartman

well my truck is a 2000 so i thinks it should be after the recall. I will probably just pay a mechanic to pass me and drive it like it is. Im tired of this Bull$hit.

Maybe you should have read it because everything you said has already been stated.

when the part or parts been replaced , will take the ECM 4 cold starts to reset it self , if you pull the neg battery and take it in for the em test before the ecm reset you will fail , exhaust falling apart = fail , now thats a safty issue ...
