Default 2001 Ram 1500 4x4 - Outer Tire Wear

What is the common problem for this. I replaced my track bar, ball joints, tie rods and sway bar end links 2 years ago and now I am feeling a light shake in the wheel and noticing the outer side of the front tires are bald and the inners are perfect. I grabbed the joints and ends with a pry bar and they seem ok, the boots are a lil worn but the joints dont have play... hmmm

Thanks guys

Are you keeping up on your tire rotation? I had some tires that were starting to wear on the outside too... I noticed it before it got too bad through. I had the alignment checked - and it was still within spec. The guys at the tire shop noticed I was behind on my rotations, and that it was important to keep that up.

It shouldn't be a camber problem, since its a SFA... but maybe the toe-in is too much?

not really but tire rotating is not fixing the problem. its hiding it. Im trying to fix the problem first then rotate.

Funny you brought it up because driving into work this morning i was thinking if I did rotate them more, each tire would have a little ware not two that are f'ed lol

It was my understanding that outer front tire wear is normal due to cornering - all the cars/trucks I've had have done that, when I see it rounding I know it's time for rotation.

I agree but the inside of the tire is pretty much untouched... which leads me to think something in the alignment is messed. When I replaced everything up front, I used the old tape measure garage alignment and got it to within 1/8. the next day I took it to Pep Boys and had them do a real alignment, they said i was really close. Paid the 80 bucks and drove. Unless this is how the dodges ride and this tread ware is normal. These tires and steering parts were put on 2 years ago and about 30K miles

I'm not sure how you checked the ball joint, but in my case I thought mine was good as well until I had it inspected. He put a bar under the tire after he had it off of the ground and pushed in on the top side of the tire. Sure enough it was bad. ALso it never hurts to rotate them when you change the oil

I did basically the same thing and everything is solid. My next set of tires will be rotated for sure. im looking into the dual steering shocks - might be my next investment

If your alignment is over two years old, then it could be out of spec by now. If you hit a curb, go offroad or anything like that, it can eventually throw your alignment off. I would take it to a tire shop and see if they would do a free alignment check just to see how it is. Wouldn't hurt just to be sure.

Have you checked the links on your track bar? This is the cause of the "Death Wobble" as noted here. I see where you said you replaced it but if it is two years old it maybe starting to see enough wear to cause the vibration.

On my 2001, the passenger side tire would get worn right off on the outside and the inside was like new. As it turns out I had a bad steering box, and the constant over correction was causing this. Since it was replaced 6 years ago, it has never worn another tire.
