I think in 2000 they went to the dual piston calipers on the fronts.

Yeah the whole outside steering knuckle is different on the 2000+,
Also they changed the steering from a t to a y.

As for your truck, did you have 4 wheel abs? Did the new axle have it?

Do you guys think/know the distance and orientation between mounting points on the knuckle are different? I've been looking at pics, and they look similar.

To my knowledge, the main differences between the early/late 44's is the steering damper mounting point (as they changed steering designs) and the sway bar mounts. Not sure about the track bar mount. Other than that, the major mounting points are the same.

So it should be possible to put newer knuckles on the older axles, and upgrade to the dual piston calipers?

If anyone has access to a 2000 or 2001, would you mind measuring the distance center to center of the bracket mount bolt holes on the knuckle?

I don't mind doing this for you...but I'm having a hard time visualizing the measurement.
