Bad gas mileage help!!!!
More power doesn't necessarily mean more gas. If you can make more power in your cruising rpm range, you will get better mileage cause its in the throttle less.
It is the reason why putting a major overdrive so you are cruising 60 at 1000 rpm doesn't work (maybe for a diesel).
Performing mods that will give you more top end won't do anything to help mileage.

also thats why i want to cruise around the well i guess if the truck makes 345tq at 3200 rpm 2000 would be low, so i guess i should probably try to get it in the 2500 range so its less throttle uphill. or should i go higher/lower rpm???
thats why i said "usually". yes the mods can help but only if i dont let the intake or exhaust sounds get the best of me.

I bought my 96 5.9 4x4 last fall and it never did more than 11 mgp. Most tanks were right around 10.0.
This was all in town and short trips - about as bad as it gets, but I was easy with the throttle.
I had an opportunity to drive about 140 miles, round trip. All state highway and interstate, with just 3 or 4 stops getting on and off.
I was very surprised to get 16.75 on that trip.
It's back to 10.0 and all in town driving again.
So don't be discouraged. I think ever a little bit of city driving will kill your mileage.

I gotta agree with dsulli here. On a mostly freeway trip, I was able to squeak 18mpg out of my 3/4 ton 4x4 with the 360, and that was with a blown plenum. Now that everything is fixed, and the engine is running great...... I haven't had a chance to test the mileage. (daughter drives more than I do, and she just puts in 10 or 20 bucks at a time.... so, hard to gauge mileage.)
well i appreciate the help everybody but now i got to buy a new exhaust system. mine spent a little to much time up north and the muffler just broke in half so as soon as i do all my tune up crap and other stuff to try and get some better mileage i will report back if i get something good, if not than im buying a crotch rocket lol
OK, 4WD with AUTO that's 2 dings on you. Its nothing against auto's or 4WD its just that they are what we in the HOT ROD world like to refer to as PARASITIC drag. If I were you replace plugs, wires, cap & rotor with decent quality parts, NOT THE MOST expensive, expensive don't mean BETTER, no matter what anyone tells you. 11MPG on 111k is NOT BAD considering... however you should be around 13-14MPG AVG. I have only seen trucks with 2wd and MANUALS gets closer to 18-20MPG. Dont knock it mine gets 14MPG with 200k. MAINTENANCE is KEY...
