synethic vs regular?????
youve got to remember, were talking about an engine that orginated in the early 70's. they were BORN to run dino oil.
syn oil doesnt have the chemical properties to retain hydraulic pressure in the lifters as well as dino oil.
ive seen FAR too many examples of this baked on crust in our engines to use syn oil. for whatever reason syn lacks the ability to keep particles in suspension and it ends up as crusty deposits everyhwere.
i have not heard anyone who has actually torn down one of these motors say that syn is the way to go, ive only heard people say "syn makes it run so much smoother, it made the noise 'less noisy' " the two arguments speak for themselves...

Read/search beyond this site and you will find a major sludge issue with these motors(class action lawsuit). Mostly the 5.2 for what ever reason. Most complaints(off-this site)had service done at dealership at spec intervals with basic oil. Even the newer 4.7 is sludging up with reg oil.

In modern motors, I will run synthetic. They were designed around running it. On the older design motors like the ones in our trucks, its wasteful to buy synthetic. They were designed around a conventional oil, so thats what I run. The filter and change interval is what really matters.
My $.02
My $.02
I've been trying a synthetic blend in my Jeep with the Inline 6 engine, this engine is just as old as the magnum engines are and it seems to do a good Job cleaning the engine out, the oil gets black within 2k miles. So I dunno.
I heared alot about how good Castrol GTX dino oil is for these engines, and when i bought my 5.9 Jeep last nov they put in Castrol GTX. The engine is very smooth running and runs great so i think when i do the oil change im going to put in Castrol GTX. I've been thinking about putting that in the Inline 6 also and stop using synthetic simply because of the things i read about it.
What i want to know is how often should i change the oil if i dont drive it much ? I bought it on Nov 12th, its Feb 21st right now and i have only driven about 2200 Miles in those 3 1/2 months, i dont take long trips either, usually short distances. Im thinking 3k miles like you usually do but since its been almost 4 months without a oil change im thinking i should do it now.

Just a few(of the thousands) complaints about the 5.2 and reg oil sludging up in low mile durgo's. Theres thousands more.

Hers a good read about sludge. Read the heading "The bottom line on sludge damage".

it doesn't matter as long as you change the oil every 3000-5000 miles.
Also, synthetic can suspend particulates. It is the oil filter that is supposed to take them out anyway. K&N oil filter of Mobil 1 is what i use. Sometimes Bosch because that comes with valvoline oil change sales at autozone.

My truck has had syn used on it ITS WHOLE LIFE (Have PO receipts) and this is how they looked undder the valvecovers. Spotless!!

The sludge is from engine flush and using RESTORE. Restore has sludge actually in it, and it is supposed to react with high heat to fill in scratches in cylinder walls. So what is to stop it from doing that all over the engine?
52K miles (when pic was taken) on the truck and only synthetic.
