burning oil smell
Hello everybody am new to the sight. I got a question just changed my plenum gasket on my 1998 5.2 ram. It always smelled like it was burning oil that was the reason for changing it. job went good everything sealed tight, but still getting that strong oil burning smell. What possibilitys could it be valve seat cup? or what. took plugs out they were dry except two the back driver and passenger side had a little oil on threads only. sorry dont know if this is correct place to put this thread .
Welcome to DF.
Probably oil leaking out the valve cover onto the exhaust manifold. If you are still burning oil, replace your PCV valve with one from the dealer. Aftermarket units don't always have the correct flow rate.

thanks for the info, valve cover gaskets are good, and put a new pcv valve in it yesterday, but it's after market, so i will try the dealers, and see if it works.also i was not able to clean all of the old black residue out of the plenum could that still be creating the smell.
Swap out the PCV for a dealer unit. They are like seven or eight bucks.
Fix the exhaust leak.
How long since the work has been done? If it is fairly recent, it might take a bit to clear things out. Running a can of SeaFoam thru the intake probably wouldn't be a bad plan.

You WANT the intake on the truck.
In fact, you want the engine running...... Just use one of the vacuum ports, and a length of hose into the bottle to get it in there. Keep in mind, that if you allow to much of it in at once, it will stall the motor.
Seafoam is an upper engine cleaning agent. It will break loose a bunch of the crap that accumulates from burning oil with the blown plenum. Cleans things out nicely. Smokey as all get out though.... so, don't do this in town...... REALLY annoys the neighbors. (ok, if you don't like yoru neighbors, go ahead and do it up in the driveway.

I had my slav.... erm... helper..... keep the engine at about 1500 RPM while i held the brake booster hose (which was realy too big...) in the bottle so it would suck in some of the fluid. Worked fairly well. The cloud was amazing...... Engine ran a bit better when I was done too. I am probably going to do it again in the not real distant future. My plenum was REALLY bad..... and my truck has a boatload of miles on it.
