Default Replacing my ECM in 2001 dodge 1500

So engine light went on. Took it up to firestone said it would be a $700 fix! NOT PAYING THAT! I've done some research on this form, and found out how to fix by myself for $250. Only question I got is when i order the new ECM, Am I allowed to drive my truck? Heard it would mess up the mileage and engine light would still be on is this true? please help.

Thanks,
Brandon

I personally had a bad experience with them with two defective pcms. The company will give you the run around if you ever need to speak to someone higher up. For ****s and giggles give them a call and try to speak to a manager. you'll get handed off to other employees, but never actually speak to a manager or supervisor. After giving me every excuse they could, they then told me they didn't have any lol. I bought mine on ebay and only after I filed a claim did I actually ever get to speak to a manager. I had the same code on my truck, and went with auto computer exchange for the price. You get what you pay for. This companys reviews on BBB are horrible too, but didn't bother to check until after I ordered.

Suggestions?

Well I would recommend getting pricing at local auto part stores. I got mine from a local autoparts store after going through the trouble with ACE. Mine is a reman by a well known company called "cardone". Havent had a problem since. Also the advantage of going local is you are much less likely to get the run around.

That said, my roommate just bought a new pcm for his manual swap conversion, and he got his from http://www.solopcms.com/ He plugged it in and was ready to rock and roll. Just how it should have been.

Your call on what you want to do. If you can't get it local, i'd try solopcms.com or even rockauto.com for that matter.

Wish you luck, and keep us posted!

Thanks, I wont be buying from that website. I'll get it from solopcms.com now! But my other question is when I order the part and it asks for mileage. Am I allowed to put more miles on my dodge before putting in the new PCM? or will the engine light come back because the trucks mileage and the pcms dont match?

Your mileage is stored in the cluster, and is independant of the pcm mileage. As far as I know the pcm mileage is for record keeping purposes only. You won't get a cel if the mileages are different, I can tell you that. I did drive mine on the bad pcm until the new one came in the mail, but had dodge fix the mileage for piece of mind for free (I knew a tech). If you must drive it... just keep your paperwork showing the pcm replacement in case you ever have a problem. Idealy it would be nice to not drive it so everything matches. You gotta do what you gotta do.

I recently replaced mine and took a chance at the local u- pull-it for $35. So far so good. I do think this PCM may have the death flAsh though. No worries though as a tuner is in the near future.

Yours just needs to have the vin flashed. If you get one from your local parts store, they should ask for the information, so it can be done before you get it.
