Default 1996 dodge ram popping in engine and transmission jerking at high speeds

i have a 1996 dodge ram 1500 5.9L It idles fine. when i give the truck gas to take off it makes a popping noise in the engine. when i hit 50 to 60 miles per hour and it trys to shift into OD it hesitates to go into gear and when it goes into overdrive the truck starts jerking. if i punch it it drops out of od and goes and stops jerking. it pops and sputters pretty bad then the tranny acts up. and i noticed while driving the lights dim and go bright over and over. oil pressure dropping to 0 only when warm. when i give it gas it goes back up. no check engine light on.

heres what i have doen to date. i replaced tune up parts on truck. did plugs but havent got to wires and distributor cap. it seemed to run fine for about 10 minutes after plug replacement. i replaced ignition coil and air idle control sensor. the plugs were old but threads were black and oily looking. its got good fuel pressure too. brand new gas was put in it. seems to be constant problem no changing no matter how long i drive it.

Check the sticky for the proper plug wire routing, it was a problem the way they were originaly routed. Then you should pobably use the search function on the intake manifold fix.

Your jerking in O/D is an engine missfire. Finish out the tune up, and fix the plenum. Then, check the cat, and replace the upstream O2 sensor.

Finished tune up started the plenum replacement. This must be a sick joke. Average personcould not do it. I've been working on cars for awhile and isn't easy and no my gasket wasn't broke but I'm 6 hours into it might as well replace it.

its not the gasket that's the major problem there. the plenum repair replaces the steel belly pan with an aluminum one, so that future gaskets dont get blown out from diff heat expansion rates...or something of that nature. Did my belly pan 3-4 weeks ago, and so far, seems a bit easier to get rollin. 3rd gear really pulls, and 5th gear on the interstate, is much better. Used to stomp it doing 60 and literally take 20-30 seconds to reach 65. Now I punch it doing 60, and I can actually hear the engine continue pulling, and hit 65 in 10 seconds or so. Not mind blowing, but passing power is a bit better.

ok got the plenum back on and the misfire was in a bad spark plug wire. plenum gasket was just crazyness well live in learn, but i have a tip be careful with the temp sensor by the upper radiator hose. since doing the plenum gasket know i have a knock on lower half of engine and got a backfire from exaust now gonna replace exaust gaskets. as for the oil pressure problem, im gonna replace the oil pump with a high flow pump and change out rod bearings this weakend with a plastigage to measure gaps from parts store will let know how things turn out.

Erm, yeah.... Intake gaskets require a specific torque, AND a specific torque sequence to seal right.

Before you run the engine again, check the oil.
