Default Steering Gear Box?

How hard is it to change the steering gear box on my '97 dodge ram 1500 4x4? Is there special tools you need or anything? I just spent $700 on redoing the whole front end so if i can do this myself i'd like to try.

Not to bad of a job. A pitman arm puller is about the only special tool that you might need.

Spend the money, and get a NEW steering box, don't bother with a reman, you will just be installing the same problems again.

I changed mine this past summer and it wasn't that bad. The only things I needed to get was a pit arm puller which was $13 and some power steering fluid.

Flush the system too, or you'll void the warranty.

I don't have the money to buy a $400 - 500 dollar steering box. I still need tires and a few other things so it not really a option. why is a reman a bad idea?

Because most of them are just as loose as the one you take out.

They never replace the gears. The boxes are dissassembled, cleaned up, painted and put back together with new seals. Buy me for $300.

My original box is shot, and soon I hope to get a Borgerson box, which is superior to the factory box.

Because the parts for our steering gears are NLA.
