HELP! What's this part in my tranny pan??
Just do it 2 1/2 turns. The old TF727's you backed off 2 1/2 and this is a trans of the same design only this has an OD unit. Every manual I have seen, or read has a different torque sequence... some say back off two turns, some say 2 1/2, some say 2 7/8's.
Now your truck takes off in 2nd, no first? Ok.... did you disconnect the battery by chance? If so the PCM needs to re-calibrate that would explain that.

and just a side note, they never touched this truck (previous owners) the spark plugs were so black and burned I don't know how it would even start. I managed to get 5 out of 8 installed. 3 are stuck (and I mean stuck) but that's for another thread I'm hopin
. wish me luck and thanks you guys!!!! really. I mean it.
I did 2 7/8ths.
I found it easy to mark 12,9,6, and 3'oclock positions around the screw, with 7/8ths being between the 12 and three.
That way I could see my mark on the screw go around two complete turns and then 7/8ths of a turn.
Of course I thought I did all this wrong, then I realized that even though my tranny did need a re-build it was a stupid govenor pressure sensor that caused the no shift...

great idea on this. will do. will keep you guys posted. man didn't know owning a dodge truck would be so community friendly.
Some noise is normal. When you pull the vb, some of the fluid circuits will drain. shift the truck into each gear and let it sit there for a minute or two to chase out the air. luckily it's easier to burp than the cooling system.
The best way to read the dip stick is to find where the fluid goes all the way across the dipstick. if the fluid isn't all the way across the stick, it's probably drip from the dipstick tube.

AND always start this process in a forward gear. If you hit reverse first you risk cocking a piston which will send you right back into the transmission.
Ok guys here it is. I pulled the pan out, drained and bathed in the damn fluid again, pull out the valve body, and guess what? The wedge was still on the band!!! The reason I wasn't feeling any torque is because I'M A NOOB AND WAS TRYING TO TORQUE TO 71 POUNDS PER FEET INSTEAD OF 71 INCHES PER FEET!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Anyway, i'm gladd I took it apart just to satisfy myself or else I'd be sitting there wondering if it did fall off again.
So I put everything back in, torqued it right, 2 7/8th's turn back out (I hope) torqued the outside at 31. Then came the moment of truth. I turned it on, pulled it directly to first gear, 10 seconds, second gear, 10 seconds, etc. including reverse last. then back to neutral (since park doesn't engage the tranny i think I read.)
Let it idle until warm and checked the fluid level again. the dipstick wasn't covered completely on both sides, but just down one side. Added more, idling, and checked it again, got close to the middle. another 2 minutes idling, added more, perfect.
I then finally popped the sucker in reverse, released emergency brake, and it wanted to fly. NO HESITATION. Then came first gear, popped into first gear with no hesitation. gave it some gas. felt good. then came second and finally drive. I then decided to get out of the driveway (lol) and on the actual road. Popped it in D, and gave it gas. At first there was some whirring (like the fluid was now really getting in all the crevices including gear I was in.) I decided to ignore it since by now I figured the pcm is getting used to what just happened and the fluid is settling.
I started accelerating and didn't feel it shift. I thought to myself I'm screwed, then realized that it shifted so smooth I didn't even notice!!!!! Ithen slowed down and took off again, this time not stopping till I hit about 40mphs. I had to focus to feel it shift from first to second to third!!!!!! SOOOO SMOOTH!!!!
I realize I"m getting over excited but you have to understand I never did anything on a car other than electric, some engine, and oil. I know the tranny may be on its' way out since the wedge was in the pan for who knows how long, and it was neglected, but hey, I'm happy.
Total cost: shift sensor: 114.00. Fluid: about 65.00. Gasket and filter: 25.00.
You guys saved me ALOT of money. Ever in Miami, cold beers on me. Now to tackle the low pressure switch on my A/C. Thanks again!!!!!!!

thanks guys! will check the fluid level tomorrow. I never drive it but will use it for home depot trips etc. my other car is my primary. i'm gonna go to home depot and back then check the level. what worries me is that i was chcking/filling the levels with the car on mounts. i may have overfilled since it was at an angle albeit a small angle.
