Default Bad 4x4 problem

Ok so on my home a few nights ago, i wanted to do a little wheeling. So i put it in 4x4 and i was off. It was doing fine then all of a sudden, while in drive, the truck mad a terrible grind from transfer case, sounds like a chainsaw going off and would not move again. It wouldent even stay in park with it in 4x4. So i took it out of 4x4 and tried to engage it in 4x4 a couple more times and every time it would make that terrible grind. So i put it in 2wd and drove down the road and it was fine, it was late so i parked the truck.
Yesterday, i put in 4x4 with a few of my friend there to see if anything looked wierd when it grind and it wouldent grind, it was great in 4x4 all day. BUT, last night it did it again, and this morning it wont do it. It will only do the grinding when the truck is in drive in 4x4. And its completly random. So im lost i dont realy know wear to start.

Check fluid level first.

Drop the rear driveshaft, wiggle the t-case output shaft, does it move? If so, pull the tailshaft housing, and see if the snapring that holds everything in place is there.

How many miles on the truck?
