Throw it in the bed of another truck, take it to the quarter wash, use the high pressure washer on it. That will blast all the crap off. At least, the bulk of it. Elbow grease will be required as well.

Once that is done, you need to thoroughly dry the block. Blowing all the water out with compressed air works fairly well...... just be sure to put some rust inhibitor (oil) on surfaces that won't get painted....

Or, take it to a machine shop, have it hot-tanked, and media blasted. Squeaky clean after that experience......

I think machine shop would be the best option. Although, it does cost more......

buy some diesel and put it in a weed killer sprayer and go to town. Then pressure wash it

We used to have a quarter wash that had an engine wash bay. (for while the engine was still in use.....) They used a non-petroleum based solvent, that was water soluble, which diesel most certainly is not........ I don't know if that place still has it or not.... given the way the environmentalists have been screaming though, my guess would be "no".....

when i was cleaning my kegger, i went to the local dollar store and bought,
oven cleaner (get the regular can not the scented or no odor one)
purple power (this was the best at getting off burnt oil)
engine brite (really didnt do anything)
a couple green scrub pads and a couple stainless steel scrubbers.

i soaked the whole thing for like 20 min the hosed it off and went to scrubbing. use the steel ball to get the thick stuff but dont use it on the mating surfaces. the green pads i used to get the hard to reach places

at the end of it all i painted my intake keg with some red brake caliper paint.
looks good and its the first thing that catches your eye when the hoods popped
