I've run worn out diff before and they made more noise than the tires, which made me wonder if cheap new gears were the same.

let me know where you get your gears from...... i run 35's with 3.55 and it sucks

If your gears are louder then your tires, even a highway tread tire, something is wrong.

Some people i have spoken too say cheap gear have a whine to them, which made me ask the question that started this whole topic.

Will 4.88's be too much gear for 35's?

Your engine will run 2-300 RPM higher for any given speed/gear combination than with 4.56's. Of course, it will also give you TONS of low end grunt.
