Default 99 Dodge Ram 2500 Tranny

So i bought a 99 dodge ram 2500 4x4 today. There is no reverse in the truck. My question is if you stand out side the truck and pull it into reverse you can hear it click like it wants to engage but it does not engage. Any ideas on what this could be or how to fix it. All other gears work great

NO REVERSE (D RANGES
OK)
1. Gearshift Linkage/Cable
Mis-adjusted/Damaged.
1. Repair or replace linkage parts as
needed.
2. Park Sprag Sticking. 2. Replace overdrive annulus gear.
3. Rear Band Mis-adjusted/Worn. 3. Adjust band; replace.
4. Valve Body Malfunction. 4. Remove and service valve body. Replace
valve body if any valves or valve bores are
worn or damaged.
5. Rear Servo Malfunction. 5. Remove and disassemble transmission.
Replace worn/damaged servo parts as
necessary.
6. Direct Clutch in Overdrive Worn. 6. Disassemble overdrive. Replace worn or
damaged parts.
7. Front Clutch Burnt. 7. Remove and disassemble transmission.
Replace worn, damaged clutch parts as
required.

Ok so is there a way to tell any of that. These are the symptons so far. and its an auto. Standing outside the truck and pulling it into reverse. It makes a clickin noise like wants to engage but doesnt. No reverse lights come on. Sometime they do when your half way in between reverse and park. Driving down the rd and puttin into first does not make the engine brake come on it just keeps going like i never did anything. Any ideas would be great thank you

Start with a fluid/filter change, and adjusting the bands. While the pan is off, look for stuff that shouldn't be in there.......

Sounds like the linkage cable. Does it seem to go into drive in a weird position?

Ok this seems to be the problem now. The fluid was black but not burnt. I went to tightin the rear band but the screw just keep going in and never getting tight idk if that is right or not. Like I had to take the nut off all the way and the adjusting screw just kept going in never really gettin tight. Not sure what that could mean or if that is right. So I just put it back where it was in the first place and put all back together. Any help would be great thanks

Ya lost me. Did you drop the pan?

Sounds like something fell out to me. Band anchors are pretty good at that...... and would explain a lot.
