Diesel won't bolt to the trans in the truck now. And the two wheel drive won't bolt to the transfer case. You need to figger out what ya wanna do about a tranny, and then start searching for electrical parts. The same PCM 'might' work for the diesel..... but, that also depends on what year the truck is that its going into..... 94 or 95, and you can't flash the PCM. (they don't do that trick) even 96 or 97 will be questionable..... So far, Hemifever is the only one I know that writes tunes for the older style OBDII, and I don't remember ever seeing anything mentioned about diesels.......
If you can find a second gen, doesn't really matter what year, (so long as it has the 12v diesel.... think that changed in 98?) that the engine is blown, or whathaveyou, totaled in some fashion or other, that you can strip the parts you need from, that would be your best bet.
Second choice would be locate the parts from a diesel the same year as your friends truck, get the PCM, Wiring harness, and trans. (must also be four wheel drive, if you friends truck is 4x4.) Might also need the radiator.... don't know on that..... plus numerous other little parts I am forgetting.

If the truck you are swapping into is a 98+ you are SOL as the only available computers would be for 24V and they have a computer controlled IP.

he can use the sensors that came with the 1500 he plans on using and just wire the 3 wires in. you could have them as toggle switches and push buttons if you wanted or you could hook them into ignition power.
i know someone that stuck a 12 valve cummins diesel in his 95 ford f150. he just sliced into existing wires just had to add a button for glow plugs. you just need to power the pump, glow plugs and starter and you are ready to drive down the road.

you CAN run the factory pcm, it would control the cluster and fuel pump circuits. use the factory sensors (original to pcm) for both oil pressure, coolant temperature...the factory trans bolts up fine, you WILL need a diesel converter. You will also need a ford starter solenoid to properly wire the grid heater to a switch, furthermore, if you want it to be automatic you can pull the glow plug controller from an old 6.2 gm diesel and adapt it *it wires to the coolant temp sensor*.
I did the swap from a 2500 v8 gas to diesel with a friend in two days with the motor fro the donor already out.
To recap this specifically.
You need:
Modify your wiring harness( to maintain oil pressure and coolant temp) the engine's not controlled by the pcm, and your tach wont work, actually thats not true it will...but you need the tach pickup from a 97 12v.
DIESEL TORQUE CONVERTER this is a do not pass go cannot do this without it sort of thing.

6.2 gm diesel glow plug controller ( grab it with a good couple feet of harness) make note of the wiring before removing it from the donor, your gonna run it through the coolant temp sender and ignition. you cannot use the glow plug controller directly in the grid heater circuit...it doesnt support the kind of amperage you need.
And really, that is it. Use the donor engine mounts, buy new converter bolts, make sure your flexplate (on the diesel) is in good shape...and enjoy good fuel mileage.
